Complete Lawn Care Schedule for Spokane Valley Homeowners

Beautiful green lawn in Spokane Valley following a proper seasonal care schedule

A healthy Spokane Valley lawn doesn't just happen — it follows a seasonal rhythm that starts in late March and continues through November. Here's a month-by-month guide to everything you need to do.

March: Prepare for Green-Up

March in Spokane Valley is a transitional month. Daytime temperatures start creeping above 40°F, the last significant snow events typically occur before mid-month, and your lawn begins the process of coming out of dormancy. This is not yet the time for aggressive lawn work, but it's the time to prepare.

  • Schedule your spring cleanup for late March or early April
  • Order fertilizer or schedule your fertilization program
  • Check your irrigation system for winter damage
  • Assess any snow mold damage from winter

April: Spring Cleanup & First Fertilization

April is action month. By early to mid-April, most Spokane Valley lawns have thawed completely and are ready for their first serious care of the season. This is when you complete your spring cleanup — removing winter debris, dethatching matted areas, re-establishing clean edges — and apply your first fertilization.

  • Complete spring cleanup (debris removal, dethatching, edging)
  • Apply pre-emergent weed control by mid-April
  • Apply early spring fertilizer (light nitrogen for controlled green-up)
  • Begin mowing as needed — typically every 10–14 days at first

May: Establish Your Mowing Schedule

By May, your lawn is in full active growth mode and weekly mowing becomes necessary for most Spokane Valley properties. Cool temperatures and spring moisture create rapid growth that can get away from you quickly if you fall behind.

  • Establish weekly mowing routine (mow at 3–3.5 inches)
  • Apply spring fertilization boost if grass hasn't fully greened up
  • Treat any early broadleaf weeds (dandelions, clover) that slipped through pre-emergent
  • Check and adjust irrigation schedule as temperatures rise

June–July: Summer Heat Management

June and July are the most stressful months for Spokane Valley cool-season grasses. Temperatures regularly exceed 90°F, and fescue and bluegrass will go semi-dormant or experience significant stress without adequate water. The goal during summer is to minimize stress, not push growth.

  • Continue weekly mowing — never cut more than 1/3 of the blade at once
  • Increase irrigation to 1–1.5 inches per week (water deeply and infrequently)
  • Apply summer fertilization application (light rate to avoid stress)
  • Spot-treat any grassy weeds (crabgrass, goosegrass) that germinated past your pre-emergent

August–September: Fall Recovery Begins

Late August signals the most important lawn care window of the year in Spokane Valley. Temperatures moderate, grass begins recovering from summer stress, and fall aeration season opens. This is when your fall program delivers the most impact.

  • Schedule and complete core aeration by mid-September
  • Overseed thin or bare areas immediately after aeration
  • Apply fall fertilization (higher potassium for root development and winter hardening)
  • Keep watering to support overseeded areas germinating

October–November: Winter Prep

October and November are about closing out the season properly. The tasks you complete now directly affect how well your lawn comes out of winter and how quickly it greens up next spring.

  • Complete fall leaf cleanup before first significant snowfall
  • Final mow at 2.5–3 inches (slightly shorter than summer height)
  • Final fertilization (winterizer, if not applied in September)
  • Winterize irrigation system before hard freeze (typically October in Spokane Valley)
  • Sign up for winter snow removal if applicable
